Build Up & Crown

Build & Crown Pictures

  1. Seat patient & Introduce yourself.
  2. Place the bib on patient. Set up hand pieces, place air/water tip, take Burr Block out of package. Open Crown Prep Kit, then place Mirror, Explorer, & one cotton plier (from Crown Prep Kit) on the bracket table, set up suctions & air/water tip
  3. Take Impressions for Temporary Crown.
  4. Place topical if Anes is required.
  5. Notify the Doctor that the patient is seated, of the patients concerns and any other pertinent information.
  6. Doctor comes in to anesthetize the patient.  Then lets the anesthetic soak in so they are numb for the procedure.  After a few minutes ask the patient if they are feeling numb and let the dr. know more is needed, if necessary
  7. Tooth & build-up/post build-up are prepared for the crown
  8. Retraction cord is placed & allowed to set for 5 minutes (to allow room for the scan – to image the space of the sulcus so the lab personnel may do a nice job on the margin)
  9. Doctor scans the prep(s) and adjacent teeth for the crown(s)
  10. Doctor reviews the scan with the patient and rescans areas if need be.
  11. Try the alginate impression for the temporary in to make sure it seats well, Trim undercuts if need be, Squirt a small amount of temporary material on the bracket tray to judge set, Fill the Impression tray with the temporary material and Remove it at the rubber stage of the set.
  12. The material is adjusted to match the bite using articulating paper then polished on a rag wheel in the lab using pumice & the high polishing agent. Be careful not to remove too much material when polishing, Cover Contacts.
  13. Temporary is cemented with temporary cement and all extraneous pieces are removed so as to not cause gingival inflammation
  14. Chart appointment in patient’s chart. Make any changes or adjustments to patient’s appt. Add your name in the assistant field if not already there & Complete the appt.
  15. Give Patient instructions concerning care of their temporary, including if it comes off for any reason they are to call to get it re-cemented or use fixodent and use that to keep it on so the tooth does not move and the crown not fit.  Requiring a new one to be made with another crown charge.

  2. Look up or add a new patient
  3. Make sure case type is restorative
  4. Make sure case is sent to FTI Dental Lab
  5. Note the due date to know when to schedule the patient
  6. Make changes to the odontogram (mark which teeth are missing)
  7. Select the teeth or tooth and the restoration
  8. Make any notes if necessary

Discussed with patient for when vital teeth are being prepared there is always the risk that decay/restoration removal as well as crown preparation may result in a future root canal
